MOBILE -- A judge has awarded $ 4.4 million in damages to two Delchamps grocery store managers who were shot and critically wounded by a disgruntled employee suspended for failing to work a July 4 shift.

Attorney Buddy Brown, representing the injured men, said the judgment was against Kirkland Investigations & Security Inc. of Saraland, which provided security for the downtown Mobile store where the July '97 shooting occurred. Kirkland's attorney, M. Lloyd Roebuck, was not immediately available for comment Tuesday on the possibility of an appeal.

Brown said Tony Dodd, 36, was awarded more than $ 2.4 million and JayDee Johnson, 34, was awarded $ 2 million.
