A Montgomery County jury began hearing testimony Tuesday in a wrongful death case in which a Sidney Lanier High School student died after surgery.
Brandi Timmons, 17, died Jan. 2, 1999, at University of Alabama at Birmingham Hospital after undergoing surgery in Montgomery on Dec. 23, 1998, to correct an overbite.
The Timmons family has filed a civil suit against Anesthesiology and Pain Management of Montgomery.
According to depositions, Timmons went into cardiac arrest in the recovery room after the surgery. She suffered brain damage that led to her death.
Buddy Brown, an attorney with Cunningham, Bounds, Yance, Crowder and Brown, L.C.C., said the Timmons family is not asking for a specific monetary award in the suit.
"We will leave that to the jury to decide what is appropriate to award," he said.
The trial is expected to last two weeks.
The jury was seated Monday and both sides presented opening statements Tuesday morning to Montgomery County Circuit Judge Charles Price.
The jury heard testimony Tuesday from Timmons' mother and the chief anesthesiologist of Anesthesiology and Pain Management.
