Remington Arms Co. has manufactured its Model 700 rifles for decades. Over those decades there have been thousands of complaints about these guns firing without the trigger being pulled. There have also been nearly 100 lawsuits alleging personal injury and death from these guns unintentionally firing.
Documents obtained by CNBC demonstrate that Remington has known about this safety defect since at least 1989, but only recently has Remington taken any meaningful steps to make its guns safer. A class-action settlement is awaiting approval from a U.S. District Court Judge that would pave the way for replacement of the trigger and firing action in as many as 7.5 million Remington rifles.
The following Remington firearms, dating back to manufacture dates in 1948, are likely affected: Model 700, Seven, Sportsman 78, 673, 710, 715, 770, 600, 660, 721, 722, and 725. The XP-100 bolt-action pistol is also likely affected. Most guns are eligible for a new trigger mechanism free of charge.
