From January 1 to June 30, 2016, in the U.S. there has been a dramatic increase in traffic fatalities. The more than 17,700 traffic deaths year-to-date marks an increase of over 10%. In addition, there have been more than 2 million serious traffic injuries requiring medical attention.
The rise in traffic deaths reinforces concerns about distracted driving, which is the suspected culprit behind the significant increase in pedestrian, motorcycle and bicycle deaths. “We have an immediate crisis on our hands,” said National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) chief Mark Rosekind. The fatality total is “not just a number,” he said. “Those are people.”
Globally, road crashes kill more than 1.25 million people and injure as many as 50 million people per year.
