Our team at Cunningham Bounds, LLC was recently placed in the Hall of Fame of the National Law Journal after we obtained an $11.8 billion judgment against ExxonMobile on behalf of the State of Alabama. This case places our firm at #4 of 100 inductees in the National Law Journal.
In the case, ExxonMobile was found to have withheld the state’s royalties for natural gas wells in the state waters in the Gulf of Mexico. When the issue first went to court in 2001, a jury awarded Alabama $3.5 billion in punitive damages. However, the Alabama Supreme Court overturned that decision and requested a retrial, which resulted in the current jury decision—which is to award the state $11.8 billion.
