$140 Million Verdict for Wrongful Death of a Patient Due to Medical Transcription Errors
Juno V. Douglas A. Amare, M.D., Et Al. | Baldwin County, Alabama, Circuit Court | CASE. CV-2008-901100
The attorneys at Cunningham Bounds, LLC recovered a $140 million verdict for the wrongful death of patient. Thomas Hospital was held accountable for the incorrect transcription written down by its outsourced medical transcription company.
When Sharron Juno was discharged from Thomas Hospital in Fairhope, Alabama, her doctor at the hospital dictated a discharge summary in which he stated that Ms. Juno’s bedtime dosage of insulin was eight (8) units. The companies in India that transcribed this discharge summary recorded the bedtime dose as eighty (80) units, and delivered the transcription to the hospital. When Ms. Juno was admitted to a rehabilitation facility after falling at home and the hospital delivered the erroneous medication transcription to the rehabilitation facility, orders were given that incorrectly specified the eighty (80) units of insulin at bedtime. As a result, Ms. Juno was given the wrong insulin dosage causing her to suffer full cardiopulmonary arrest, and causing her to remain unconscious until her death.
